The obesity epidemic continues to skyrocket in the United States with a staggering 36.5 percent of adults suffering from this life-threatening condition. Even worse? If incidences of obesity continue to rise according to their current trajectories, the country’s obesity rate will be closer to 50 percent by the year 2030.
In addition to being linked with reduced quality of life and poor mental health, obesity is also associated with many of the country’s leading causes of preventable death, including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. And the impact is not limited to individuals: the economic toll of obesity is also steep, with a total cost in excess of $300 billion annually.
However, clinical weight loss interventions are only as effective as an individual patient’s adherence. Meal replacement products, an increasingly popular weight loss and weight management post-care strategy, aid adherence by replacing higher calorie “regular” meals with calorie- and portion-controlled alternatives, including beverages, meal/snack bars, and prepackaged shelf-stable and/or frozen options.
